Browns Fans Beware: Browns Update

The Kellen Winslow injury report from BSR earlier doesn't scare me too much. He just had his knee scoped and after all the injuries he has had it wouldn't be surprising at all if he had to do it every off-season. Either way, he hasn't even withdrawn from the Pro Bowl, so it isn't very concerning to me. There is, however, a potential looming consequence of last season that could leave the Browns reeling.

With Spygate II on the horizon and Matt Walsh looking more and more to play the part of Bryan McNamee it seems increasingly likely that some "rules bent" videotaping occurred. Realistically, if nothing had happened how would the name of the guy who supposedly did it be released already. Just wait until the senate gets a hold of this. Most of you are probably thinking right now "How does this effect the Browns?" Well I'm hear to tell you friends; it does.

The Patriots, much heralded as a defensive monster in 2001 ('02 Super Bowl Year), had a coordinator to their domination. His name: Romeo Crennel. Now, will the penalty be as harsh for a D-Coordinator going Quid Pro Quo? Probably not. At the same time, we could see Goodell bring the hammer on everyone involved. Especially if this turns out to be a long history of cheating. While most Browns fans called for Crennel's head at the end of the year last year (4-12)most fell back in love with him after the teams near miss on the playoffs and 10-6 record.

However, riddle me this. How does a man go from Assistant Coach of the year in 0-3 to having a horrible defense the next as a head coach? Even now, the offense has turned it around for the Browns and the defense lags behind. Sure, it might take some time to get his guys....but it didn't take that long on offense. Maybe it's that he doesn't have that knack for knowing what others are about to do like he used to (And by knack I mean tapes of what they are going to be doing).

In other Browns' new Kellen Winslow decided to be an ass clown and tell the team he needs his contract renegotiated. To top it all off he is leaving the dealings in the hands of public douche Drew Rousenhaus. Now don't get me wrong; the Browns should be appreciative of the services of the "Souldja" however, Sergeant Winslow should remember who didn't shaft him after he decided to play Evil Kinevil in a parking lot on his new toy.

The team he barely played for that didn't take back a lot of money that it could have. He certainly is worth more than his contract dictates; but for the years he essentially didn't play he was worth siginificantly less than the Browns payed him. I would have no problem if he played out his current deal and then demanded a monster when he is up for a new contract. If the Browns couldn't give it to him, best of luck Kellen. But to come to a team that has helped you out and given you repeated chances to ask for more than you agreed to in the contract you have now? I hope that he elects to sit out the rest of his contract and goes Maurice Clarett on himself (by that I mean get fat and slow: not build an arsenal and wear a bullet proof vest around).

So here's the outlook for the Browns next season goes something like this. They look to re-sign their drug dealing running-back, hope to convince their best handed souldja of a tight end that the money he has is enough and that Drew Rosenhaus is wrong, and praying that their head coach isn't suspended. Good work this season guys. Looks like rebuilding is just around the corner for the Browns....just like a year or two ago. Ugh.

Good call, Brave Sir. Can't forget the goose. I was Clarett for halloween last year and it was nothing short of fantastic. Of course I had to borrow a bulletproof vest from my roommates law enforcement family connections -- and the grey goose/clarett jersey/football pants/toy assault rifle set me back about $120. But it was worth it. Add some borrowed cleats 2 sizes too small and red knee socks and a borrowed football helmet and you are a goddamn SOLDIER armed to let hot girls cannonball your high class vodka. Great, great night.

Sounds like a hell of a night.

Ummm, have you ever thought that the Browns defensive personnel could possibly have been inferior to that of the Patriots?

B Dub has officially been added to my list of heroes. That is top 10 costumes of all time in my mind.

Brave Sir -- you have unofficially made my day. lol... the saddest thing was -- I was a Case law student at the time (in cleveland, just in case people are unaware), and only about 10-15% of the people I saw understood the costume right away. About 25% were like ooohhhh right!!! after I mumbled an explanation, and the rest were just donkeys. Anyways, much love to all OSU and browns fans and especially my dear friend Brave Sir.

Dan, of course. However, he's had time to get his guys and to put his scheme in place and the defense is still mediocre at best.

He certainly had better players in New England but we haven't even seen much improvement in the players the Browns do have.

Romeo was brought in to make a difference on the defensive side of the ball and he hasn't delivered.

I agree with warning track power on the defensive shabbiness of the browns, however -- we really did start to make an improvement last season. I mean in my opinion, we went from just god awful (3 and 2 years ago) to bad (last year), but last year bad turned into "hmmm... are we getting better???" as the year went on. Browns D definitely came to play in some of the later games, maybe right after the midway mark is what i'm thinking of. I would never go so far as to categorize our defense as "good" -- but for a few stretches of games I actually, dare I say it, felt optimistic about the D.

b dub, could you tell us more about your costume and the reaction. Riveting.

Giving up 19 to a Bengals team that score just 13 against the vaunted 49ers defense the week before hurts.

Especially when it costs you a playoff birth.

Brian Billick was considered an offensive genius yet the Ravens could barely move the ball during his time there.

Marvin Lewis is considered great at coaching up defense, yet the Bengals have been consistantly bad on it.

Talent makes the unit, not the coach. The Browns defense is about a zero in talent.

Still, he's a defensive coach, changed the system, and has made his moves.

Still hasn't helped.

The Browns defense remains awful. However, my biggest problem with Crennel is his inability to successfully challenge plays. I can't find the actual stats, but it has to be awful. I think I've seen him win one challenge in his three years as head coach.

The Browns have spent most of their higher picks on Offensive players during the Crennel era. Which would explain the great offense and the shoddy defense. Things really arent that bad in Cleveland guy.

Warning Track Power said...

True, but they have invested at least a second rounder on defense every year under Crennel. Add to that FA pick ups he wanted: ie McGinest and Washington.

In his drafts there have been 2 rounders and a first rounder spent on defense.

He hasn't been exactly left wanting: other than for better skills for evaluating players.... and the other teams practice tapes.

Face it: there's a QB controversy, there's an aging drug dealer in the backfield, no first round pick, and a coach who might get suspended and the Browns will be playing a #2 schedule.

Sounds like a recipe for a disaster of a season.

The controversy involves guys who are actually good at throwing the football, the aging "drug dealer" (let his friend use his phone to set up a deal) was one of the best backs last season and is still in his 20's, and the coach won't be suspended. This is the Cleveland Browns, it would take a 2 win season for it to be called a disaster.

Going from 10-6 to anything worse than 8-8 is a disaster. If you watched the awful exhibition that is the pro bowl or remember DA lost out before the season to Charlie Frey for the starting job you would probably recognize that DA isn't that great.

Add to that Lewis will be 29 before the season and Winslow's knee might never be right and he's already wanting more money.

Lewis played a full season in 2006 his first since 2003. He had significantly less carries in the last two seasons and he still didn't play a full season last year.

WTP,

Why would anyone watch the Pro Bowl?
